EASY TO MAINTAIN EARLY WARNING FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM
A prominent Fruit Packing Facility in Simondium, Paarl, Western Cape, provides a fresh fruit export packing and cooling service to approximately one hundred deciduous fruit and citrus producers in the Boland region of South Africa.
Triocon Consulting Engineers contacted Technoswitch in early 2020 to assist with a concept design for a fire detection system at the fruit packing facility. While additional designs were being done based on updated drawings, a fire started at the facility. The fire spread to the packing lines and storage area, destroying equipment and stock and damaging the building. A new production line had to be installed, the roof had to be rebuilt, and the premises needed cleaning up, resulting in tight timelines to get the site ready and working again.
Technoswitch and Triocon visited the site in September 2020 to assess the fire risks on the premises and finalise the system design. Manyene Holdings, a black female-owned B-BBEE Level 1 fire detection and security integrator, was awarded the fire detection tender in October.
The facility required an easy-to-maintain smoke detection system capable of monitoring the 11,000m2 area and accurately sampling the dusty air for smoke particles. Securiton’s SecuriSmoke Aspirating Smoke Detectors (ASD) with inline dust filters were selected. The dust filters significantly extend the service life of the smoke sensors, airflow sensors, and fans in the ASD, thereby reducing maintenance costs whilst maintaining reliable, false alarm free detection.
Apollo’s Discovery Open-Area Voice Sounders are well-suited for this production-style environment where multiple sounders and process alarms are part of the daily operations. Using a standard siren as a fire alarm posed the risk that the warning could be disregarded in the case of a fire. Therefore, the choice of voice sounders was a much safer solution for facility’s work environment.
An Advanced TC5000 intelligent fire panel monitors the eight ASD-5352 SecuriSmoke detectors and Apollo devices.
The system installation was completed in February 2021, and fruit packing now has a reliable and effective early warning fire detection to protect its building, equipment, and staff.
